Construction Worker Organizer with CTUL (Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en la Lucha)
CTUL seeks to hire an organizer to build power with Construction Workers in the Twin Cities metro area. This position requires the ability to work independently and with a team.

CTUL is a worker-led organization where workers organize, educate and empower each other to fight for a voice in their workplaces and in their communities. We partner with other organizations and leaders to build a movement to win racial, gender and economic justice. We identify the root causes of injustice and work to shift the balance of power between those who have it and those who don’t to improve the lives of our communities for present and future generations.
Over the past thirteen years, CTUL has forged a new path for worker leadership development in the Twin Cities, opening new spaces where low-wage workers of color have a voice in their workplaces and in their communities. CTUL seeks to strengthen its work building a multi-racial organization. CTUL has a vision of organizing the most marginalized workers in our economy to directly confront the elite corporations and 1% that control our economy, make demands, and win concrete and structural changes for communities across the metro area. Through worker-led campaigns with CTUL, workers have:
- Worked in coalition to win increased wages and benefits for hundreds of thousands of low-wage workers through the $15 minimum wage in Minneapolis, and Earned Sick & Safe Time in Minneapolis and St. Paul;
- Transformed the retail janitorial industry, making the Twin Cities the first metro area where the industry is unionized;
- Recovered over $2 million in unpaid wages and damages in cases of wage theft; and
- Won long-term changes in their workplace that bring over $7 million in additional income per year into the poorest communities in the metro area.
This program focuses on leadership development to build power with non-union construction workers across the Twin Cities to end wage theft in the industry and create structures in which workers can have a voice on the job. To accomplish this, there is an intensive focus on base building and leadership development.
This is a full-time, salaried position organizing construction workers. This work will be carried out in the community and at workers’ homes and workplaces to organize workers to join a movement fighting for fair wages and working conditions for themselves and others. This includes meeting new workers, identifying potential leaders, and developing leadership to build power in their workplace and in their communities. It also includes supporting workers who are experiencing wage theft at work to communicate with employers to win back stolen wages and highlight their victories.

- Previous experience working in construction highly desired
- Have a car and be comfortable driving
- Have a flexible schedule, including some early mornings, nights and weekends
- Written and spoken Spanish skills required. Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
- Previous organizing experience is helpful but NOT necessary if you are motivated and willing to learn
Primary Responsibilities (Essential duties & responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following)
Construction Worker organizer (90% of work)
- Find new workers at work and at their homes
- Set up 1-1 meetings with workers identified at work and through other contacts
- Listen and understand the interests of each worker in your area
- Identify potential leaders
- Motivate and agitate workers to fight
- Be persistent obtaining commitments from workers
- Get workers to take action, take risks in confronting their boss
- Develop meeting agendas and facilitate meetings to engage construction workers
- Build CTUL’s membership and collect membership contributions
- Meet and communicate regularly with team to evaluate and improve work
- Participate in creating new strategic ideas on how to engage workers
- Participate in and lead direct action
- Report on organizing activities to your team and the organization
CTUL general support (10% of time)
- Perform tasks as part of the team that develops leadership with all workers in CTUL’s base
- Support other organizers when necessary for organizational goals
- Be part of raising money to support the organization
Salary & Benefits
- CTUL has a tiered salary range set by the Staff and Board based on the principles of economic justice and inclusion. This is a salaried position currently compensated at $49,500 per year with an annual cost of living raise of 3%. This full-time salaried position will work on average 40 hours per week.
- Benefits include: 3 weeks paid vacation, 12 paid sick days, paid holidays, medical and dental insurance for you and your immediate family at 10% cost, annual end of year payment of 5% of yearly salary towards retirement fund, and others.
