TAKE ACTION RECOGNIZES CTUL WITH THE 2011 PROGRESSIVE LEADERSHIP AWARD
CTUL members with Governor Mark Dayton and State Senator Patricia Torres Ray
Last Friday, November 18, CTUL received the Progressive Leadership Award at Take Action‘s 2011 Annual Leadership Awards Celebration. We are grateful to Take Action for the recognition of the risks that hundreds of retail cleaning workers have taken over the past two years, organizing for workplace justice.
Mario Colloly Torres, a former retail cleaning worker, received the award on behalf of the organization, explaining: “In life, we have to learn to take risks…because taking risks helps us find the right path to follow.” Already, workers have won many important changes in the retail cleaning industry by taking many risks. These are key first steps in the movement for fair wages, fair working conditions and a voice in the workplace in retail cleaning.
Workers are continuing to take risks and now have more friends in the movement than ever, including: Governor Dayton (above),
State Senator Patricia Torres Ray (who reserved half a table for CTUL members and joined us in celebration throughout the dinner)
and Minneapolis Mayor R. T. Rybak, shaking hands with CTUL member Florencio Campos
