Community letter of Support – Dia Sin Inmigrantes

 February 17, 2017

To Whom it May Concern,

We are writing as community members in support of the thousands of workers nationwide who made the principled decision to strike yesterday to demand a workplace and a country free from discrimination as part of the Day Without an Immigrant action. Federal labor law under the National Labor Relations Act protects workers’ rights to participate in such a strike.

We stand firmly with the immigrant community in demanding workplaces and a country free from discrimination. We are committed to defending the rights of workers to take action to defend their workplace rights and their civil rights without fear of retaliation.

The overwhelming majority of employers have respected workers’ right to participate in this action. In fact, many employers chose to close their businesses to show their support. But we have heard that a select few employers have chosen the low road, and have threatened to retaliate against their employees for participating in the Day Without an Immigrant action.

As leaders and elected officials in Minnesota, we are committed to standing with workers to ensure that all employers respect workers’ rights, and to ensure that immigrants are welcome in our workplaces and our communities. We are prepared to take action with workers if their rights are not respected.
