Yesterday we posted a link with the story of the action at Solhem HQ. In the action, two crews of workers who worked on Solhem’s The Fred Project in Edina came forward with stories of wage theft for work done on that project. Now Solhem is proposing a new affordable housing project in Edina called Lincoln on the Creek. Our message was clear: We support building new affordable housing, but it cannot come at the cost of wage theft or other worker exploitation. It’s time for Solhem to join the Building Dignity and Respect Program to ensure that all workers on their future projects are treated with basic dignity and respect. Check out the full story here, and check out more pictures and video from the action below…
In early recognition of International Women’s Day, the action started with a powerful delegation of female construction workers who delivered a letter to Solhem, informing the company of the conditions workers faced on The Fred Project, and inviting Solhem to join the BDR Program.
As always, there was lots of joy, powerful signs and chanting in the action…
And this year workers brought street theater to the action…
In the theater skit, the large developer tried to pit renters (red fish) against construction workers (blue fish), claiming that they can’t both build affordable housing AND have good working conditions.
And then the renters and workers realized that they were one in the same – renters work, and workers rent. The red and blue fish joined together to become purple fish with a joint demand for more affordable housing AND basic dignity and respect for all construction workers.
