El Dia de los Reyes

Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en la Lucha Celebrates El Dia de los Reyes

Around 200 workers and their families packed the basement at Bethany Lutheran Church for a Convivio Familiar celebrating El Dia de los Reyes.  At the event workers discussed next steps in the Campaign for Justice in Retail Cleaning, including:

1. Plans for a mass rally later this year calling on Cub Foods to play a leadership role in ending human rights violations taking place in retail cleaning; and

2.  Workers who clean at Lunds & Byerly’s called for support in a growing campaign to change conditions in their workplace.

The day included a raffle for adults, toys for kids, and plenty of great food (including pozole, tamales, and some last minute pizza since we ran out of food within the first 30 minutes due to the overwhelming turnout).

Chipotle workers spoke about a campaign they are organizing to respond to a recent mass layoff of Latino workers in Minnesota.

And of course, no CTUL event would be complete without some good old fashioned popular theater…

The skit focused on the stark difference between the economic well-being of the workers who clean stores in the metro area, and the owners of those stores:

Momentum is growing in the movement to end the human rights violations taking place in retail cleaning.  On January 19, allies will meet to talk about next steps for ally organizing in the Campaign for Justice in Retail Cleaning.  Keep an eye out on the website for more details…
