Construction workers have always been and will always be essential to our communities! Read CTUL member Jeferson’s story about his experience in the non-union roofing industry and the rampant problem of wage theft:
“My name is Jeferson Mendoza. I’ve worked in the construction industry for 10 years and I’m a member of CTUL.
Everyday we wake up with a dream and we do the hard work just for someone to not pay you your full wages. Wage theft is a daily problem in the construction industry that so many workers struggle with but don’t have the tools to defend themselves against it.
We’ve recently won my wages back in an extraordinary fight. It was really difficult but we knew our rights as workers and our potential if we united together.
In construction, we work in difficult conditions— ice, snow, extreme cold. Then when bosses don’t pay you, it’s unfair. Especially in the roofing industry, you can imagine that work isn’t easy. Our work is essential for the entire community.
We all have the right to demand our full wages and be treated with respect”
